Head Coach Certification

The chart below outlines the REQUIRED courses/requirements for the level of hockey you will be coaching. For more information, check the HEO Website.

Having attended and completing a different course does not preclude anyone from having to have the REQUIRED course. The courses are set up to teach the coach the required information to coach athletes at the different levels of their growth and development. None of these courses are higher levels of certification; they are simply different areas of knowledge.
Example 1:
A coach already has Development 1 certification but is going to coach a Novice A Rep team this season. That Coach MUST take the HU–Comm. Coach Stream on-line and the Coach 2 – Coach Level Course in class.
Example #2:
Last season you coached a Bantam AAA team and you took the High Performance 1 Course. This year you are coaching a Peewee AA team. You will need to take the Development 1 course.

Notes:

  • The Development 1 course has a mandatory Post Task Assignment and a Field Evaluation that must be completed and passed to receive full certification. Coaches are permitted to assume their roles while the process is taking place.
  • The High Performance 1 Course has an extensive Post Clinic Assignment and a Field Evaluation that must be completed and passed in order to achieve full certification at this level. Coaches are permitted to assume their roles while the process is taking place.
  • Development 1 and High Performance 1 Certification is subject to Certification Maintenance Requirements. Please visit the Maintenance of Certification page for more details.

For further information please review the branch Hockey Eastern Ontario website.

Notes:

  • The HTCP Level 1 on-line course can be found at www.hdco.on.ca
  • Level 2 certification can be obtained by taking a Standard First Aid course with CPR level C. This can be taken with any approved First Aid Training provider such as Canadian Red Cross, St. Johns Ambulance, Ottawa Paramedic Services, etc. Level 2 will also be granted to Doctor’s, Fire Fighters, Nurses, Police Officers, Paramedics, Registered Physiotherapists, Athletic Therapists, and Military Personnel with First Aid Certification. • All Trainer Certifications expire on 3-year cycles, i.e. if you receive level 1 certification this fall it will expire August 31, 3 years later. To re-new Level 1 certification go to www.hdco.on.ca prior to your expiry date and complete the on-line re-certification course.
  • Level 2 Certification expiry dates coincide with that of your Standard First Aid expiry date. In order to renew level 2 status you need to simply supply the HEO office with a copy of your most up to date Standard First Aid and CPR cards and we will update you to the expiry date of that certification, there is no fee for this.
