Hi folks -- my name is Pete Shaughnessy, and it is a great honour and privilege to be the coach for this year’s Silver Seven U12 A team.
I have been involved with S7 as a Hockey Ops rep for the Almonte-Pakenham MHA, an assistant coach, and even as a room monitor.
I started coaching when my oldest son began IP. I’ve gone on to coach at house level, Rep B, spring/summer hockey, and last year at tier 1 as part of the Silver Seven U11 AA bubble.
When I first got into coaching through the Hockey Canada methodology and started playing some semi-organized games myself after a long absence, I realized just how much I love the game. As a player growing up in Cobourg, I played on the rep team for 5 years, culminating in 3 consecutive OMHA championships. At 16, I was invited to Jr A, Jr B, and the Ontario U17 tryouts, but I walked away from the game. The results had been there, but my heart wasn’t in it.
However, through coaching, playing pick-up games, and seeing the game through the kids’ eyes, I rediscovered just how fun hockey truly is.
I strongly believe that when kids are engaged and motivated to learn and grow, fun is a natural outcome, and success is inevitable. When kids come to the rink loving the game, you see their very best -- as individuals, and as a team. I will work to get to know your child individually and to understand how I can help them to be at their best.
Our focus will be on teamwork, compete level, and continually improving fundamentals. I will look to the players to build on their awareness of the game, their decision-making, and their physical and mental well-being.
I look forward to an amazing year, having great fun as we get better every day. We’ll learn from our losses, celebrate our victories along the way, and meet each challenge with our best effort.
